THE AVERAGE MARTIAL ARTS DISPLAY (THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!)

By this sweeping statement made above, I do of course mean that we need to understand what it is NOT.

It is not a lesson

It is not a grading

It is not a technical demonstration in front of ones "peers"

It IS a show!

And, as such, it is required that it be interesting, informative and (most importantly) exciting and entertaining.

A martial arts display is a golden opportunity for a local instructor in several ways: It affords him the opportunity to stimulate and highlight his students by giving them particular areas of responsibility, as well as enabling her/him to demonstrate in a very concrete manner that the club is an integral part of the community.

In short: It is an important operation in public relations, and so need to be handled with due care and professionalism in order for the martial arts club to capitalise upon this.

So, you have been approached be some official or other who has asked that you perform a martial arts display at some local up-coming event.

The first thing you need to do is to glean as much information as you can from this person using the good old WHO, WHAT WHERE, WHEN, WHY and HOW:

WHO- Will you be performing in front of?

(Is it just the general public? Or is it some type of "special interest" group such as local dignitaries or (horror of horrors!) other martial artists?)

WHAT- precisely do they expect of you and your demonstration team?

(Are they looking to encourage more people into sports? or raise awareness levels of the need for people to learn some form of self-defence? Etc)

WHERE- Are will the event be held?

(Will it be indoors or outdoors? Will there be mats? Etc)

WHEN- Will it take place?

(Will it be in the heat of summer, or the cold of winter? Will it affect your travel arrangements?

WHY- Are you being asked?

(Is it because they have heard good things about your club? Or is it just because the Mayors Daughter happens to be one of your students?)

HOW- Long do they want the display to last?

(Is it to be a short, sharp type of show, or a more lengthy, drawn-out kind of affair?)

All of this information is absolutely vital in identifying the time, resources, materials and personnel you will need to do a good job. Once you have all the facts you need, the next step will be to relay this information to your instructors/students at the next training session so that everyone is made well aware of what is going on.

Sometimes, it will be possible for everyone in the club to perform in the display, at others, you might be required to be a little more selective and choose a special team from amongst your students. This can cause several problems for the average martial arts instructor:

It can disrupt the normal state of affairs in the dojo, having a detrimental affect upon the teaching and learning environment and, as well as causing students to feel nervous and anxious about the performance they must give. In addition, if you do have to choose a display team from your members, then it can place a great strain upon the more usual type of group dynamic, so you will need to consider each of these aspects before committing yourself and your club to such an endeavour.

BASIC OUTLINE FOR A KARATE DISPLAY:

(adapt to your own particular martial art(s) Judo, Kung-Fu, Aikido, etc)

So, in your club you have all of the usual elements found in a karate dojo.

- Rei

(The formal bow, made after a fast, dynamic entry!)

- Junan Taisen

(warm up exercises. NOT very interesting for spectators, but necessary. Try and do the majority of your warm up prior to entering the display area)

- Kihon Waza

(basic techniques, can get the attention of the crowd if done well, with plenty of KiAi!)

- Kata

(classical forms, choose one of the shorter, more visually exciting kata though!)

- Kumite

(sparring, a real crowd pleaser this: Remember to try and involve the crowd. For example, tell one side of the audience that they have to cheer for one of the Karateka, while the other half has to give as much support as possible for the other one!)

- Goshin

(self-defence, what everyone wants to see: A real show-stopper. A small child being picked on by a group of much older, bigger people: All together now: "aahh"! Then, the small child turns the tables: "Hooray!!")

- Ko-Budo

(weapons, they lend a good bit of excitement, especially the good old nunchaku! Its important to give a good introduction to this particular "turn". Give a short, potted history about the particular weapon being used, and draw special attention to how dangerous this weapon is, etc.)

- Tamaeshiwara

(breaking techniques, absolutely the BEST TYPE OF "Grande Finale" there is. Again, a good, dramatic build-up is of the utmost importance here!)

- Rei (remember to do some bows towards the crowds as well, all with loud "oose", they will love it, and you should try and "milk" it for all it is worth!)

Try and make sure that you have a good sound system, and keep up a good running commentary throughout to build and maintain the crowds energy and enthusiasm, and also help guide them through what is going on, and so increase their enjoyment and appreciation.

If you can include some other aspects to make it even more exciting, such as lying on a bed of nails, and having someone break a concrete block on your chest, or bending spears with your body, then all the better (providing you trained in this type of thing, have practiced it, and know for certain that nothing can go wrong!)

A martial arts display has, of simple necessity, to be a marriage between good, solid technical demonstrations of martial prowess and a bit of "Razamataz" for the crowd. Also, try and inject a bit of humour into the proceedings, as everyone appreciates a bit of a laugh.

Now is the time for everyone to mingle with the crowd, chatting to them and answering any questions they might have regarding your club and the martial art you practice, and (very important this) handing out some leaflets with all the information they need regarding when you train and even directions on how to get to your club!

Also, don't take it for granted that the main event organisers have contacted the local press. You should contact them as well. If they cant send a member of staff to cover the event, then they will normally ask you to do your own write -up on it and send in any photos that might have been taken, which they will then edit and include in their publication some time in the future. The martial arts press might also be interested, so give them a try as well.

To make any display a success, you will need to plan and prepare it. This means setting extra time aside for plenty of rehearsals. These will serve to both improve the overall technical performance and help the team to establish and maintain a good, positive group dynamic.

Remember to have under-studies for each of the "main acts" because, as we are all well aware "whatever can go wrong, will go wrong!" and whatever happens the show MUST go on.

Also, be sure to make use of anyone who is not directly involved with the display as "Logistical Support". They can help out with setting up, transport, getting food and drinks for the display team, etc. If you happen to have a junior section in your club, then you will usually find that some of the parents will be more than happy to lend a helping hand. All of this assistance is invaluable, as you will find that it will free you up to concentrate upon making sure the actual display goes according to plan, rather than having to worry about putting down mats or buying and transporting tiles and planks of wood for the breaking techniques etc.

That said, everything is still, ultimately, your own responsibility. So you should carry out at least one check upon absolutely everything in order to put your own mind at ease.

CONCLUSION

As already stated, a martial arts display can be a golden opportunity for the local martial artists to not only "strut their stuff" gain good publicity and even some new members, but also to show that they are an integral part of the community at large. It is an exercise in public relations that can have a huge influence upon the way our friends, neighbours and colleagues perceive the martial arts. That is a huge responsibility, and is one that demands we take this type of opportunity seriously and do as good and professional job as we can.

In this piece we will be taking a closer look at what this writer considers to be the Top 10 Recommended Martial Arts Movies of all time. Keep in mind that this is a very large genre and any type of top 10 list will typically carry very heavy debates. There is nothing on this planet like enjoying a great martial arts films, and this is why we are paying homage by offering this list. Many things were considered while developing this list however, in the end it seems like storyline was sometimes able to beat out the actual form and physical performance of the stunt men that helped make these films so great.

In the very first slot we have "Enter the Dragon". This is a 1970's film with Bruce Lee, the man some people accredit to turning the genre into what it is today. Out of all his pictures, this is considered by many to be the most popular.

This next choice might surprise some people, but we are going to have to go with the American film: "The Karate Kid". Remade for the new generation in 2010, the original picture is not only very well done but also considered to be a staple of 1980's American cinema by many critics.

Our next choice is a very enjoyable film. It is the Asian film: "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon". This film is often considered to be a major attempt by the modern Asian market to recapture the genre that they have given to the world.

The next film comes straight out of the 1990's and features America's most beloved martial artist/comedian, Jackie Chan. "Rumble in the Bronx", is a really great example of Chan at his best, when American audiences were just starting to discover him in heavier circulation.

Right in the middle of our list comes Jet Li. The film "Hero" is very important to note as it offers some of Li's best work to date.

"Fearless" would have to be not only the sixth entry but the second Jet Li entry. A very entertaining picture from 2002, directed by American horror genre regular, Ronny Yu.

The next film is very important to take note of as it brought Jackie Chan heavily into American and world Culture. This would be the late ninety's comedy "Rush Hour". A film that Chan made with comedian Chris Tucker. There are two sequels but they can't hold a candle to the original.

This next film has a soft spot in most people's heart because it is based off the first very popular martial arts video game. We are of course talking about "Mortal Kombat".

Filling the last two slots is American film maker's Quentin Tarentino's work. His film: "Kill Bill: Volume I", paid perfect homage to the 70's era, exploitation style, kung fu films.

"Kill Bill: Volume II", is important to mention because the resolution of this wonderful story is so very entertaining to watch.

We hope that this guide that offers up the Top 10 Recommended Martial Arts Movies of all time, will greatly assist any person with a martial arts appetite that they are looking to satisfy. Keep in mind that most lists similar to this are often heavily debated, however careful research supports a lot of our choices.

Entertaining can be very rewarding, but it can also feel like a huge responsibility. When anyone takes the stage in front of thousands of fans, there's a job to do and a lot at stake.

Entertaining is as much as an art form as the music one plays. It takes many years to learn that when a true entertainer takes the stage, that the concert is not about the entertainer, it's about the people in the audience. The entertainer is not the star, the audience is the star.

For example, for many years I used to take the stage and the first thing I did was to start blasting away and showing off my quick hands at the piano trying to impress the crowds, my fellow musicians, and myself. And it worked, to a certain degree. I have a thick press kit of critics comparing me to the legends but the problem was that it didn't translate at all into good CD sales. In fact is, the better I got, the slower my sales.

What was happening? I was playing for my own pleasure expecting audiences to dive into that realm with me. Some did, but others became alienated because they just didn't have the musical knowledge to go there with me. Also, I was playing from ego and not from the heart.

Many performers seek validation outside of themselves by showing off and many don't even care what the audience thinks. But, the truth is, most should care what the audience thinks and what the critics think. Because, bigger audiences and more press equals more gigs and more money.

However, seeking the approval of colleagues, media, critics, and fans can be self-absorbing and self destructive if you're not careful. You should care what the audience thinks but at the same time be conscious of not trying not to impress them..

Personally, I've only been star-struck twice in my life. The first time was when I was a teenager and I saw Oscar Peterson perform in Toronto. I said to myself, "hey, I want to do that" and began to pursue my dream to become a jazz pianist. And, not just any jazz pianist, a highly trained and technical pianist like Oscar. It took some time but eventually the critics started to compare me to Oscar, and others would compare me to Bill Evans, or Keith Jarrett. But, my CD sales were still slow and my bank account was very small.

The second time I got star-struck happened in Montreal when I attended a seminar by famous author and speaker T.Harv. Eker. I couldn't believe it but, he kept over 2,000 people on the edge of their seats for 3 entire days just by talking. He was extremely skilled at enrolling and engaging audiences.

And that's when my mind shifted. That day, I laid out a lot money and signed up for one of T. Harv Eker's courses. The result? That training changed my whole approach to concert performances and my life.

While I had always possessed a natural ability to entertain, I learned that I didn't really understand how highly choreographed and entertaining were supposed to be. Certainly I understood that lighting, good production and communication with your audience from time to time was a good thing. But, I learned that just by using a proven template for winning presentations I could up the ante quite a bit.

The difference in my career was dramatic. I changed almost overnight from self-absorbed and trained technical performer to an entertainer. And, the best part is my sales increased exponentially. And, I didn't have to give up jazz to become an entertainer. I just had to learn how to package it.

So, what's important to anyone wanting to make a mark in entertainment? First, learn the psychology of human behavior then learn how to lead an audience. Then, find and study a proven template for winning presentations. That will help you to overcome any limitations you may have. Entertaining is an art form that can be mastered if you get the right information from the right master entertainer.

Learning to be a master entertainer takes more than just natural talent. Check out Paul Tobey's piano music website for more information. If you're interested you can also see his online video piano lessons where you can see his entertaining style.

Comparing martial arts films of the 1970s to the action blockbusters of 2009/10

Red Cliff, Ip Man and True Legend are already iconic of the early 21st century "martial arts films"-although many can argue they are more action spectacle than true "kung fu" films. The 1970s, on the other hand, didn't rely on eye-candy effects and were defined more by the true grit of its martial arts actors: Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, the Five Venoms, Tomisaburo Wakayama, Jimmy Wong, and other real fighters trained in genuine kung fu, karate and other arts.

Martial Arts Becomes Mainstream But Evolves Into Spectacle

Cult classics such as Enter the Dragon helped change Hollywood. Its growing popularity forced filmmakers to adopt martial arts into the formula of the "action flick." Through the eighties and nineties, spectacle thrillers were expected to deliver "the fight moves", even if it was only a few basic moves supported by some stuntmen and wires. Action movies became spectacles that required equal blends of story, drama, pace, "kung fu", special effects and improbable plot twists.

In the 21st century, this became less "equal" with films relying first on special effects, then improbably plot twists (surprise is important, right?), followed by pace, martial arts skills, drama and-last and possibly least today-story. This trend extended even to the hot movies of the last few years, including Kung Fu Panda, Forbidden Kingdom, G.I. Joe and even the Transformers.

Asian Film Industry Threatens to Out-Spectacle Hollywood

With the full support and weight of China's cultural industries, Asian film has blossomed into mainstream spectacles in high demand, led by CGI treats such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers and other instant classics. Arguably, Asian film long ago surpassed Hollywood for imagination, with the western producers buying rights to several hugely successful Asian films. With the largest population demographic in the world, there can be no doubt that Chinese films are set to dominate the film industry in years to come.

Red Cliff and Ip Man are perhaps the best known of these new hit-classics, but the rumor mills and fansites are buzzing with all the latest "coming soon" gossip. The big buz movies in 2010 is True Legend (Su Qi Er), starring Zhao Wen-Zho as the historical Begger Su, the originator of drunken kung fu. Donnie Yen returns in both part 2 of the Ip Man saga and in the much anticipated 14 Blades. Chow Yun-Fat breaks the mold and surprises everyone in his role as Confucius.

Both Hollywood and Asia Rely on CGI and Special Effects

The growing spectacle and importance of the "action film" is both enjoyable to the escapist and annoying for the aficionado of the true martial arts. While the actors in many of the films-in particular Asian films-are genuine martial artists (for example, Donnie Yen, Jet Li and Chow Yun-Fat)-the over-dependence on CGI and elaborate choreography turns the adventure into comic book. With notable exceptions, such as Ip Man and Tony Jaa in Ong Bak (and to a lesser extent Ong Bak 2 and 3), most action films rely on the "wow" factor of dazzling camera angles and computer-aided "enhancements."

Ninja Assassin and the Cross-Over

There are, to be sure, cross-over films such as Ninja Assassin, where actor Rain trained 14 hours a day for months to perfect real martial arts moves (albeit only a handful of repeated moves), blended together with rather Matrix-like special effects. To some, the beauty of the realistic CGI takes away from the pleasure of watching well-choreographed real martial arts.

Ong Bak, on the other hand, led by genuine martial arts expert Tony Jaa, got by on solid martial arts and good choreography. No stuntmen, thank you. Tony Jaa was hailed as the "next Bruce Lee" for this reason, with much buzz and excitement in the martial arts community, and martial arts film fansites.

There's No Escaping Escapism

Action films are, by design, escapist entertainment. They have become somewhat comic-book (pardon me, graphic novel), but that's what most audiences do want. We want to forget reality.

Kill Bill and Kill Bill 2 probably came closest to the ideal mix for both the escapist fan and the martial arts practitioner-fan. While it wasn't "real" by any means, and contained a brilliant and zesty blend of satire, comic-book, spoof, and choreography, it never-the-less nostalgically hearkened back to the wondrous days of Enter the Dragon and the classic Japanese Samarai films of the 70s.

Japanese Film Stays True to Martial Arts Traditions?

Perhaps the film industry most aligned with the older traditions of martial arts film making is Japan. Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsman, was a low-budget film, that became an instant cult classic. Zatoichi took movie audiences back to the classic real-sword skills of the old Samarai films of the earlier decades, and spawned video games and an entire industry.

Less is More? Where is the Real Martial Arts Skill?

Genuine martial arts actors still abound-led by superstars such as Donnie Yen and Jet Li-and most Chinese martial arts actors are proficient. In Hollywood, the film-makers opt for four-move choreography (two kicks, a block and a punch), multiple camera angles (particularly close ups when the skills of the martial artist are not genuine), pounding music, FX, and stuntmen. With the old hopefuls gone from the Hollywood big screen-Chuck Norris, Jean Claude Van Damme and the other promising real martial artists-there's now a world of difference between Asian film actors-who work in frigid cold, fourteen hours a day in often primitive conditions, hammering out genuinely complex martial arts moves for relatively paltry paychecks-and Hollywood films that now rely on computer and actor stand-ins.

Batman Now Does Kung Fu

Batman now does kung fu, and so does G.I. Joe, and even Hellboy. They're fun, but the martial artist fan misses the great luminaries of martial arts films who built their careers on the "real thing": Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, David Chiang, Sonny Chiba, Chen Kuan-tai, Tomisaburo Wkayama, Jimmy Wong Yu, Ti Lung and the Liu brothers.

When it comes to art, many professionals in the field of what is considered "great" and "historic" art, believe that signed celebrity art or celebrity artwork in general, has no place in the world of art. These so-called professionals believe that true artists are only comprised of those who dedicate their entire lives to a specific type of art, such as painting or sculpturing. However, if a celebrity crosses over and begins to produce artwork, many professionals will not take them or their work seriously. They will simply believe that the celebrity is simply "dabbling" in art.

This is true of various types of art beyond the world of historic and museum type art. It can even be seen in the field of entertainment. For instance, when a musician attempts to cross over from music into acting, many people raise an eyebrow and will criticize the musician for their acting. They will make bold statements saying that the musician should stick to singing and get away from acting. This has been seen a great deal over the last decade as many rap artists have attempted to cross the boundaries between one creative medium to the next. Very few artists can successfully do both and this has been seen time and time again.

The main reason for this is that people in general will always see an artist in the first vein they were recognized in. If an individual acquired fame as a singer, not many people want to see them cross over into another field of entertainment or art. They will therefore always judge the person or celebrity based on the first thing they were successful at. This is why there are few individuals and or celebrities who have been successful in more than one creative outlet.

However, the forensics of signed celebrity art, have proven that regardless of the artistic talent of a musician, singer, sports figure, or actor when it concerns them crossing over into painting or creating sculptures, that the individual will succeed in making some type of money. It has also been proven that signed celebrity art will increase in value throughout the years based on the performance of the celebrity in their most well known field of art whether it be acting or musical performances.

Signed celebrity art is increasing in value each and every year. The majority of collectors who purchase or seek after signed celebrity art, are die-hard fans of the celebrity who will do anything to acquire anything and everything created by the celebrity.

Many fans are willing to fork over great deals of money in order to obtain signed artwork created by their favorite celebrity. Fans are very much different than the majority of professional art owners and critics. They are willing to enjoy the many arts of their chosen celebrity. This means that they enjoy the majority of everything that their chosen celebrity produces, and are more willing to give them the benefit of the doubt when they attempt to cross from one medium to another.

The Singapore Arts Festival is one of the most awaited annual arts gatherings in the world. It started in 1977 which showcases the local arts in Singapore and for years it became to be Singapore's iconic symbol that reflects the country's cultural and artistic life. From a local art festivities Singapore arts festival gradually transformed the city to become one of Asia's cultural capital today.

The National Arts Council organizes the annual art activities which is held during mid-year with month-long activities of theater arts, visual arts, musical shows, and dance festivities. The art celebrations used to be a local celebration by region in Singapore but as it became grown to be popular throughout the world international artists began to participate with the event. The Singapore arts festival has a touch of Asian culture with distinctive contemporary arts.

Organizers of the Singapore Arts Festival take the extra effort of planning non-stop activities to entertain people from various countries who are expected to participate and visit Singapore for their most-awaited art festival. They plan specific venues which they call the Festival Village at the Esplanade Park where wonderful artworks are showcased and different stage performances are held for quality entertainment. Spectacular shows are held in the village including stage performances, art gallery exhibits, and other striking installation of cultural and art displays. For better entertainment among the visitors the organizers usually allow guests to make their own art for souvenirs. Workshops, salon sessions, and master classes are also available.

For better convenience, the organizers of the Singapore Arts Festival also provide a one-stop shop that caters to the needs of the festival guests where they can buy tickets for their favorite shows, read about the history and other relevant information about the festival and buy limited edition of Singapore Arts Festival merchandise.

The festival also opens an avenue for children to learn different works of art and to discover their ability to become artistic. The festival is a perfect occasion to encourage young artists to develop their craft and discover their talents in art. Children as young artists are able to learn to become more creative and improve their skills as they discover their potential as artists. The Kids Arts Village is also located at the Festival Village at the Esplanade Park. What makes this undertaking more fun and interesting is that the activities are managed, curated, and performed by children themselves. There are great foods and drinks available during the festival too on top of the wonderful entertainment for all ages.

Because the Singapore Arts Festival has become an international event, the Artsfest Club was created in order to provide better services and benefits to those who intend to attend and participate to the event. Members enjoy the privilege of booking their favorite art shows at wonderful discounts with a seat reservation benefit. They are also updated with the latest activities during the festival through email and enjoy more discount privileges on other merchandise and festival activities. With good food, wonderful work of art, galleries, and international performances combined, the Singapore arts festival is no doubt one of the most awaited Asian cultural and art festivities by many.

1. Amazing Adventures in Thailand

A few years ago, I decided to migrate the majority of my efforts, lifestyle and long-term ninja training programs to Thailand. This decision was based on number of pros as compared to our original California program. First, I like change and I like to stretch what we can offer to students. I have run programs in Europe, the United States and now Asia equally.

Does it mean that California or the United States does not have a lot to offer? No, it just means there are other options and I have a lot of pros to talk about for the Adventurer that can financially manage a long term trip to the U.S. or Europe.

Thailand has a lot to offer serious students and adventurers. Especially those participating in our long-term Martial Arts Training camps.

There is a popular commercial in Thailand called - Amazing Thailand. It highlights the plethora of adventure and fun that is available in one small location.

In Bangkok for example, you can spend time shopping in a 7 story mall (even purchase Ferrari in one of the stores), visit historical temples (feel like a king in the Grand Palace or say hello to the emerald Buddha), or perhaps enjoy an endless variety of nightlife (have a drink on top of the world overlooking the city). Bangkok is an internationally known pit-stop and great for students to spend some time adjusting to the Asia before heading out to see what else Thailand has to offer.

For me, the major draw to Thailand was the tropical outdoor options that are available. I have taken students to the mountains of Pai near Chiang Mai to the warm blue waters of the Andaman sea. We have trained on beautiful islands like Koh Samui and climbed some of the best rock climbing available in the world in Krabi province. When you are not training in the martial arts, there is plenty of adventure in Thailand.

Enjoy a fresh and extremely healthy coconut on the beach, or go snorkeling and diving for a price that you can feel great about. Feel like checking out the bridge over the river Kwai or exploring the Erawan Waterfall in Kanchanaburi? No problem. How about taking a trip to Hua Hin where the King lives and enjoy the long ocean strip. You name it, adventure is abundant and access to that adventure is made extremely accessible.

It might sound silly, but many of my students found that renting a moped and cruising around the islands to be one of the best experiences. Simple adventures like taking a long tail boat from one island to another can be quite thrilling. Adventure is often equated to new experiences and Thailand has plenty to offer.

I believe Thailand offers the best of Southeast Asia, but one of the added benefits to being in Thailand is that with a hop, skip and a jump you can be in experience new adventures in Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos, or Cambodia. You can stretch that just a bit to visit China, Singapore, Hong Kong or further to places like Taiwan and Japan. When you are in Thailand, other locations in Asia feel closer and you are more likely to explore.

What Thailand has to offer is of course amazing. However, the real benefits of Thailand hit when we get practical and this is determined by how much of a hole any trip will have on our pocket book.

2. A big reason students love Thailand is financial

As with any functional service - money is an important tool. Students that attend my programs, often do so for long periods. Many students prefer 1-12 months of training as opposed to weekend seminars or weekly courses that often cost far more.

Another benefit of a long-term program in Thailand is the students lower personal costs as compared to what they would pay in the States. There are too many discounts to list here, but here are a few to consider.

3. Cheaper Food in Thailand

You can pick up a decent healthy meal for about $2.00 in Thailand, and that is in a restaurant. On the street, you can get a filling bowl of noodles for 50 cents. In California, you are lucky to get a meal for $5.00 (though Subway helps with their $5.00 foot long sandwiches) and 50 cents might buy you a candy bar. I also tip a minimum of $5.00 in restaurants in the States. A tip like that in Thailand would be outrageous, even 20 Thai Baht is high and that is less than a $1.00

4. Entertainment can be costly, but not in Thailand

In Thailand, you can see a movie for about $5.00. In California, a movie ticket can cost you closer to $10.00. In addition, the quality of movie theaters in Thailand is often superior to what you find elsewhere. For example, you can choose to sit in a reclining mini couch, and choose your seats in advance (even pay less depending on where you want to sit). In the States, if you cannot choose your seat in advance you are forced to arrive early to get a good seat and also be forced to sit through previews and commercials.

This savings extends to almost every sector of entertainment, whether you want to rent a motorcycle, go to a nightclub or ride an elephant, the costs in comparison are outstanding.

5. Shopping in Thailand

Although students and adventures may not have shopping on their mind, it can still be a factor for those that like to buy and why not save some money in the process. Thailand is famous for getting a great deal on your purchase and has shopping streets all over the country. You can pick up designer jeans for $20 as opposed to $200 or invest in a work of art. I managed to buy gifts for Christmas for everyone in the family in Thailand and spend the same amount (including flight, hotel and gifts) as I would have spent just on the gifts themselves (judging from my normal spending habits) in California. I also am able to buy items that are unique and not just another gadget to clutter their closets. Many people have made their short term stay in Thailand into a business and fund their new lifestyle by purchasing items in Thailand to sell in the States.

6. Travel in Thailand

You can travel from the mountains of Pai (north of Chiang Mai) all the way south to the islands of Koh Phi Phi (where they filmed the movie the Beach) for about $60. This would cost you in the hundreds in the States. When I lived in Pai, I would fly to the city for only $30. The bus ride down the mountain is about $5 and takes 2 hours. This travel savings extends to almost every type of travel in Thailand. You can take a taxi anywhere you want for about $10 an hour or hop in a tuk tuk for $5.00 and take a scenic route. Students have rented mopeds for an entire month in Pai for only $50 or $150 in more expensive locations like Samui Thailand. If you want to jump on a short flight to Cambodia to see the Angkor Wat (a wonder of the world) or take a train to Malaysia - no problem, and it won't hurt your pocket book. I often fly to Singapore from Bangkok and it costs me less than it would to fly from city to city in California.

7. Housing and accommodation in Thailand

A great thing about Thailand is that you have a choice of stay that will meet every budget. In California, a typical hotel is $100 per night and for a month at a basic hotel you will pay about $3,000 or more. This is usually without Internet, without food and without additional benefits. In Bangkok for example, you can get a one-month stay in a great hotel that will include internet, give you a great breakfast buffet (usually for two), swimming pools, fitness gym, lounge use and daily maid service all for $1,000. Not to mention these locations can be found with a small kitchen area - much like Extended Stay of America only at half the cost. Now $1,000 a month may not be cheap to many, but this is for an upscale location. You can also stay in a small house for as low as $200 a month in many locations. I have stayed in a $2,000 a month location on a tropical island and I have stayed at a $300 a month location on the same island. Both locations were great and no, you do not have to live in the alley to get a great price.

All of this is very important to a long-term student of the martial arts. They often only have so much money to spare and they need it to last them a long time. Students that come to California programs often run out of money in a few weeks (going out to town to eat, seeing movies, buying ridiculously pricey popcorn and hanging out with friends). Whereas in Thailand, they can stretch that same money into months and actually get more entertainment - not to mention enjoy the splendors of a tropical island or globally famous city.

8. Medical care

One time flying to Thailand for another adventure I couldn't help overhearing the couple in front of me. They were not together but seated next to each other. One person asked the other why they were going to Thailand. His response at first startled me. He said he was going to Thailand to see a dentist as it was just too costly in the States by comparison.

I have not seen a dentist in Thailand however I do remember a student that had a cavity removed for only about 500 baht in a great location off of a main Soi in Bangkok. I also remember visiting the hospital in Chiang Mai and after visiting three doctors for three separate issues (thought I would try to get as much covered as possible at the same time) it only cost me about 1000 Thai baht (about $35 U.S. Dollars). Naturally, this person must be getting some major dental work done to spend $1,000 or close to it to fly to Thailand to see a dentist.

However, Thailand is famous for those looking for high quality medical care for a low price. I often catch myself saying, "I will wait till I am back in Thailand to get that checked out." Many people have a poor view of Thailand when it comes to health care. Yes, you don't have to get a prescription when you want some medicine to fight off a major virus and you don't have to get 5 screenings before you can see an expert. All of the facilities I have been to in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and even the island of Koh Samui have been top notch locations with modern equipment and English speaking doctors. I would wager that I received more attention and better care than I have in the States.

As a martial artists and adventurer - it is important to know that when I am traveling that there are up-to-date medical solutions in the event of an accident.

9. Culture of new locations

I once heard that there was more culture in Yoghurt than there was in the California. This might be why websites like EscapeAmerica.com are springing up supporting life outside our borders. Some people are looking for more than freedom of speech. Now I love California and I am proud to be an American, so I will not have much to say about negative concerns. However, having run adventure programs for the better part of 20 years and teaching students for the same amount of time, I know where they can get more for their money.

An exciting part of travel and adventure is meeting new people and learning new languages. Going to places like Thailand will offer a NEW approach and with that comes a benefit that is hard to measure. If you live in the United States already, traveling to another location in the U.S. will not offer much variety. It is hard to grow if you are not challenged to adapt to new locations, meet new people and learn new languages.

10. Friends in Asia

Naturally, you can meet friends almost anywhere you go, but there is something unique about traveling in a country with others of like mind. When you are abroad, you will meet others that have taken the time and have the time to spend - people from all over the world. In California, you are likely to meet more people just like you. This can be boring. My first trip to Thailand I made good friends with people from places like Holland, England, Norway, Australia and of course Thailand itself.

11. Time to play in Thailand

One of the reasons I created my long-term program was to offer a lifestyle that is against the grain of modern society. If, for example, you come to a typical city in the United States, you will meet people that are more than likely following a very specific path. They are working, going to school or busy with their family or business.

Long term students can however get together easily to take a road trip almost any time to either explore a new location, go rock climbing or take a road trip. The same ability to meet new people and adventure with them spontaneously is available in Thailand. This is because Thailand and places like Bangkok is an adventure hub of the world.

In a typical city in the U.S. you are more likely to be challenged with schedules and a tight work week. In Thailand and for students and adventurers alike, the weekend is whenever they want it to be.

12. Moving to Thailand

I ran my long-term martial arts program in California for more than 5 years. I have not had one student of hundreds, move to California (other than to train at our camp) for a new lifestyle. However, with only a few years in Thailand, I have had already three students that are trying or have tried to move and set up life in Thailand (outside of our program). Is it because their American dollar will go a lot further? Is it because they have additional freedoms they are excited about in a new country? Is it because they can escape the almost forced social strategy that is pushed in the U.S.? Any of these might be true, and they are a few reasons that so many foreigners attempt to set up life in Thailand. Even if it is just for a change of pace and a break from the typical norm. Many might head home in a year or two refreshed and ready to settle down in their home country.

My last visit I met a man that was to only be in Bangkok for a few weeks decide to move and live there. He was only there to organize shipments of gems to the U.S. and realized he could spread his wealth and live like a king as opposed to just getting by in the States.

One of my students made the comment the first week I introduced him to Thailand that he had seen enough to know he never wants to come back - that same person is now living in Thailand and has been for more than a year now. It only took another week to convince him that his typical Untied States views of Thailand were way off base.

Do students want to live in Thailand? Some might, but the point is that for a long-term program to be successful, you need to be able to survive in a location long term. As a child, living on a tropical island was a dream and a goal. Living on an island in Thailand is not as challenging as some might think.

Our program also serves as a stepping-stone for introducing students to a new life. I too am able to fully appreciate the good with the bad. As I am from California, I am spoiled with majestic mountains and National Parks like Yosemite. However, I have found that I appreciate the wealth the United States has to offer by living abroad.

13. Freedom to be YOU

As a U.S. citizen you truly have a lot of freedom, but you will only begin to respect your real freedoms when you travel to a country where you have even more opportunities to do what you want and how you want to live. In Thailand, for example, if you want to live in one location for a week or months, it is very easy to do so without the hassle of paperwork, credit checks and other headaches that limit you from actually feeling free. Naturally, every country has limitations and Thailand has many. However, for the long-term martial artist or adventurer - Thailand has plenty of options to make you smile.

Consider being able to pick up a moped in a matter of minutes, or rent a 1 month serviced apartment without anything other than your passport (and the ability to pay of course). In the States, most houses or apartments that you rent (other than outrageously expensive hotels) charge you first month's rent, last month's rent and a security deposit. Many only charge a security deposit, but this is usually the same as the rent.

In Thailand, there is a lot of flexibility with how you decide to use your rental space too. Usually you are not charged more if you have more people in your room. This is great for students that are looking to adventure with friends and get the best deal. If book a hotel in the States (including Extended Stay Hotels) and add another adult, you will most likely be charged more for the same room and service. If anything, they should be giving you an additional benefit, such as breakfast.

My point is to point out the positive benefits for long-term students to choose Thailand as their destination for growth. I expect everyone to return home with tales of adventure and eventually settle down where they are happy and can make a successful life for themselves. However, the truth is that jobs will always be there and family and friends will be waiting for you to return. Therefore, while you are focused on training and personal growth, you might as well get the best adventure and experience that your money can buy.

14. Self-Power

I remember something that I either read or heard from a public speaker more than 20 years ago. The quote or text was something like this:

If you want to be a success - leave home.

Thinking about my experiences over the last 20 years, I would have to agree that my time away from home has taught me some very important lessons. Thailand has a lot to teach any open minded individual, but the big lesson is already available as the student must leave their country and embark on a journey. This step alone is a big step for any adult and one that I believe will help to teach them more about who they are as a human being.

One of the major differences between our martial art system and others label based martial art styles is the fact that we really push self-powered training and personal growth. It is about creating a lifestyle that you love.

I remember traveling for the first time on the boat to Koh Phi Phi island from Phuket thinking how great it would be to share this experience with students. It reminded me of the feeling Bruce Lee's character might have felt on his island trip where he was headed to deal some kung-fu fighting in the film Enter the Dragon.

What about you? Have you ever been to Thailand? Have you ever dreamed of going to Thailand? Do you know anyone who had been to Thailand? Share your experience or thought with us!

The performing arts, whatever type of it is, are usually presented to entertain in one way or another. One of the most popular of which are the performing arts of magic. In fact, there are many successful stage performances presenting magic and there are many viewers who actually enjoy and appreciate its show. And you must already know that these magic shows are usually power-driven by magic tricks which require the person who will do it years of careful practice. People have always been struck in awe and interest in learning the ways of and the arts of performing magic tricks. Given this fact, magic shows is really one of the most well-liked and appreciated performing arts.

The magic community today that is entirely engaged in the performing arts is massive. In Las Vegas alone, judging by how magicians execute their tricks and perform stunts and the like, there are many people who are left to admire how perfectly they do it. Perfecting its art require meticulous practice, tedious years of sweat, blood and tears. Although some people may just look at it as a low status job, for those who actually perform it, believe that magic is but an integral part of their lives. Have you ever watched David Copperfield perform his tricks on streets? Isn't it incredible? How about David Blaine? They do it unbelievably, so perfectly executed. The amount of patience and determination to perform a trick flawlessly is indeed overwhelming. How these magicians put in and dedicate time for their tricks is admirable, too. To faultlessly do a trick requires heaps of effort and time. However, once you get the drift of it, it can spell gold.

While there are many people who continuously criticizes the performance of a magic trick or do not concur to the idea of whatever the performer or magician is doing, there are still some who believe that magic is a great part of the entertainment industry. People who are against it must understand that performing magic is just a way of entertaining people, to give them something wondrously to watch while relaxing away from a day's work.

Learning the tricks is not easy. It requires passion to actually learn it by heart. And usually those who succeed in perfecting it are those who dedicate time and effort. Contradictory to what we used to think of magic, it can not be yours with just one snap of the hand or one wink of the eye. It is not that simple. It might require full strength and full focus.

Magic done by the performing arts is not magic by Harry Potter who uses his wand and presto! Their staged performance is a skill learned and acquired through the years of sweat thirsty practice.

Known as The Art of the Eight Limbs, Muay Thai is a martial art which is practiced in Southeast Asian countries under several different names. Using Muay Thai kicking drills the Thai military trains under a modified form of Muay Thai.

Muay Thai as we now know it originated in Thailand and has been practiced for hundreds of years and it origins, although sketchy can be traced back to Muay Boran which is a form of ancient boxing. Seeing that Thai culture is based on a combination of Chinese, Cambodian and Indian all their forms of martial arts would have had some influence of Muay Thai. This form of martial art became very popular with the general population and actually became a sport and fights in front of the public were incorporated into celebrations and festivals as entertainment. It was also used to entertain royalty and those who became more skillful became live in residents at the palace not only to entertain but to teach soldiers staff and indeed princes. It is still the number one sport in Thailand and Muay Thai has also become popular world wide. There are Mauy Thai schools and classes in most countries around the world and tournaments start at a local level and continue through to international levels.

Muay Thai is a science that uses the eight limbs of the body as weapons, two feet, two knees, two elbows and two hands. There is also a stand up neck wrestling hold that is important when using the knees and elbows properly. Using four principal techniques, Mauy Thai can be a devastating weapon.

The kicking technique is a distance combat weapon, kicks can be front and side, a round kick, a defense and block technique used against a kick and a sweeping inside and outside motion. Elbows are used in close, as defense against an elbow, self-defense with an elbow, a combination or a PAo which is a powerful technique. Knees are also used in close, a straight knee, side knee, round and a PAo and bag practice and for sparring. Punching incorporates balance, footwork and punching, bobbing and weaving, blocking and pivoting, counter punching and boxing combinations. Of course there are also strategies to use in the ring and many tactics to use against your opponent.

Naturally, like all martial arts there is a strong focus on conditioning both mentally and physically and there are a series of Muay Thai kicking drills, along with punch combinations, knee and elbow strike drills that are continually practiced be it using a punching bag, shadow kicking or with a sparring partner. These increase strength, speed, power and accuracy and are ideal for the beginner and the master alike.

The event is usually held in May and October each year, at the Beverly Gardens Park. Beside the beautiful and intriguing art displays, visitors will find several live entertainment acts and refreshment stands.

There will be nine screenings in all with price advantages if you are signing up for all showings. Tuesday evening showings begin in October, so plan to join Talk Cinema this fall.

The 41st annual Scottsdale Arts Festival is coming March 11-13. Two Hundred renowned Artists from across the country will attend this honored event, displaying their creations ranging from painting, photography, glass, jewelry, sculpture, wood, ceramics, drawing and pastels, fiber and mixed media exhibits.

The Arts Festival will sponsor an on line auction with proceeds to benefit the Center. There will be live music by local musicians as well as a Wine Country, Market and Beer Garden offering local fare.

Don't forget about 2010 Imagine Nation. This year's theme will be Family Time and Family Fun paying homage to the diversity of the American family! An interactive set up will be enjoyed by the whole family with storytelling and comedy dispersed generously among a wide range of activities reminding us that it doesn't take a boat load of money to have a good time!

The 2010/2011 Performance Calendar is packed with exciting entertainment including Dine Out with The Chefs now in its fifth year. Here's your chance to rub elbows with some of our Top Chefs, sample their creations and enjoy live entertainment.

Steve Martin is coming to town October 10th with a Bluegrass band to perform mostly musical ditties with great aplomb, sprinkled with his one of a kind humor. I have always enjoyed Steve Martin, from Saturday night live performance of "King Tut" to his many great films including my personal favorite "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels".

Next we get a visit from the amazing John Lithgow. Loved him in Third Rock and most recently Dexter as a sinister serial killer that kept even Dexter in awe of his level of proficiency with his craft! I can't forget to acknowledge Life according to Garp and Shrek as part of John Lithgow's repertoire! On October 21st John will be on stage performing his one man show "Stories by Heart" switching up our emotions from one minute to the next with his enthralling style.

Musical Guests will include the legendary Doc Severinsen who has trumpeted his way through an extraordinary career touring with such greats as Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman's bands. He has also worked with Phoenix Symphony and we all know him best as Johnny Carson's favorite musical sidekick!

Bernadette Peters will grace the stage in November with her flowing veil of ringlets to perform songs from her "Face of Broadway" show. A brilliant cross between Barbara Streisand and Bette Midler, Miss Peters will light up the stage with her designer gowns and sultry style!

Political farce and folly anyone? The Capitol Steps will be performing their sharp tongued satire leaving no one safe regardless of affiliations, and no stone unturned when it comes to amusing the masses at the expense of our Political leaders.

John Waters will entertain with his biting sharp witticisms over the Christmas Holiday wishing us all a tacky little Christmas with not so subtle adult content reminders of all that holiday fluff we so eagerly anticipate and why we just might as well enjoy it!

Sister's Christmas Catechism will grace the stage in December with yet another audience participation adventure headed by our favorite Nun. This ever changing presentation is for all of the faithful no matter what denomination! You need to be ready to don a crown or veil as some lucky audience members will be trudged on stage to become a living nativity scene during the performance! Great fun for all!

You can also enjoy Cuban Salsa dancing on stage, The Venice Baroque Orchestra, and Spanish Harlem Orchestra, The Romantic music of Robert Schumann, Christmas in Ireland by DANU, Flamenco Dance Classes, and so much more throughout the new year!

Well, I hope this has inspired you to visit the most fabulous Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and treat yourself to some of the wonderful confections of theater you deserve!

Even if you're hiring a clown or other entertainment for a child's party you may want to come up with ideas on how to keep the children busy before the entertainment arrives or after the entertainment leaves. Here are seven ways to keep the kids happily entertained throughout the entire party.

1) Provide coloring pages and plenty of crayons for the kids to color with. You can go to a kid's toy store or a 99 cent store and purchase coloring books. You can also go to your computer, Google coloring pages, and print out those coloring pages you think the kids would enjoy.

2) Keep the kids busy with arts and crafts. This could include buying small plastic bottles of assorted shapes and different colored sand and having the children create sand art. Another arts and crafts idea is to provide the children with Play-doh and have them shape the Play-doh into any object they like. A third idea is to provide construction paper with glitter and various other assorted objects so the kids can use the glitter to make pictures. The best place to purchase all this is at your local arts and crafts store.

3) Have the kids decorate cupcakes or large cookies. You can buy different color frosting for this. You can also use sprinkles, M&Ms or other miniature candies so the kids can create faces on top of their cupcakes or cookies.

4) Play musical games with the kids. Keep in mind if you hire a clown or other entertainer chances are the clown will play musical games with them like limbo, hokey pokey, chicken dance etc. So some additional ideas are musical chairs and pass the hot potato with prizes given to the winner. Another idea is to have dance contests. Sometimes these dance contests can be broken up into a contest for boys and a contest for girls. These dance contests can also be divided into a contest for younger children and a contest for older children with prizes handed out to the winners.

5) Have the kids stomp on bubble wrap in time to the music. You can purchase long rolls of bubble wrap at a UPS store or any store that sells packing supplies.

6) Host a treasure hunt in your house or backyard. One fun way of creating a treasure hunt is to use brightly colored paper with pictures (or words depending on the age group of the kids) to show where the next clue lies.

7) Another fun thing for the kids is breaking open a pi?ata. Stuff the pi?ata with candies (and maybe little toys) for the kids. There is a choice of pi?ata where the kids pull on the string or the choice where the kids take turns hitting the pi?ata with a stick until the pi?ata breaks open and the candy comes falling out. The kids will have a blast gathering around with little cups or bags to scoop up the candy.

You can also shorten the length of the party. If your party is three hours long and your guests show up an hour late then in the two hours your guests are there they will be occupied with the entertainment for an hour (or hour and a half) and the serving of the food and birthday cake almost the entire time they are there.

There are an infinite number of ways to make extremely good money by entertaining children, without any special skills at all. Thousands of people in this country do it every day. Many do it full time. Many make over $100,000 a year doing it too. It's unbelievably easy to entertain kids as long as you love children. There are dozens and dozens of ways to make money and have a great time doing it. Plus, you should be making anywhere from $50 to $150 an hour.

Plus, you don't need any special skills such as being a magician or clown or juggler. I'm not talking about being an entertainer. I'm talking about bringing supplies and materials or equipment to an event and just showing the kids how to have fun with them. What you bring to the kids is what provides the entertainment.

You may choose one idea or several different concepts to pursue for your kids entertainment business. For example, there are dozens of different kinds of birthday party services for which you can provide entertainment. Let me give you an example of a service that will make you money at festivals, company picnics, birthday parties and many other applications. Combine this service with a few other services and you will have a fabulous package of kid's entertainment that will make a lot of easy money for you. And anyone can do it. Let me show you just one idea.

SPIN ART - Kids love this! Spin Art is where kids squirt a few drops of paint onto a spinning card and create a one of a kind work of art. You stick the card in a frame for the child to take home and keep. There are two ways to go with spin art machines. One is you can spend about $225.00 to $395.00 for a more professional, heavy duty, electric ready-to-go commercial spin art machine. The cards slide into the holder quite easily - a good piece of equipment. These commercial grade units will also allow you to put spin art onto Frisbees. You will be told later in this book where to buy the machines.

Another route is to buy a non-commercial toy spin art machine at a toy store that is battery operated. There are several brands on the market. You will find them in the catalogs you will be ordering or at toy stores (Toys R Us, etc.) They are about $16.00 to $20.00 each and you definitely need to get three, using two at a time and one as a backup spare. For larger crowds, use as many machines as is warranted.

Whereas the commercial machine mentioned above has a card holder that the card slips into easily, the non-commercial toy version has little tabs that the corners of the cards have to slip into. This slows down production. You also have to clean each toy machine before putting them away being very careful not to get even one drop of water down in the hole with the spindle in it in the center of the machine. One drop of water will rust out the tiny battery driven motor and you'll have to throw the machine away.

The pros and cons are: The commercial versions are bigger than the toy version, which is a major consideration in the startup phase of your business. It's also heavier and mildly cumbersome by comparison, depending on whose version you buy. Some are the size of a large toy box or a footlocker type trunk. You don't have to clean anything when you are done because the paint splatters against a cardboard insert or garbage bag that lines the insert. It certainly looks more professional. You don't have to worry about getting water in the hole. It's twenty times more expensive than the toy version. It has much faster production because the card slips in and out of the card holder so much faster and it spins faster because of the more powerful motor.

The toy version is far less expensive, twenty times smaller and more lightweight, is more of a pain to operate because of the tabs the cards have to be slipped into and is a pain to clean after every use. They are certainly not going to last nearly as long as the commercial version. They are slower production than the commercial model. They look less professional, but do the job just fine. This is what I started with. My vote would be to start with the toy versions unless your budget and transportation/storage situation is no problem. Either way will work fine.

You are only supposed to let a child squirt a few drops of each color paint (red, blue and yellow) onto the card. You have to tell this to the child before they squeeze the paint bottle and make sure they adhere to it. If they squirt too much paint onto the card, it creates several problems.

As children approach, have them form a line in front of each of your two operating machines. Turn the machine on before the child squirts their paint. After children have squirted their paint onto the card, turn the machine off. The toy versions take a while to slow down. Don't wait for it. It slows down the whole process. To slow it down right away, put your finger on the edge of the spindle to make it stop. Remove the card and put it into a frame. Staple the frame. Slip another card into the tabs on the spindle and let the next child take their turn.

Your startup spin art supplies consist of the cards and frames and the paint. The cards and frames are sold by a company that sells them in sets of 1000 for about $125.00 at the time of this writing. You can get them for less if you order 5000 or more. The paint usually costs between $3.00 and $5.00 per quart and is available at craft stores and school supply stores. You have about 15 cents invested in each finished card and frame. Two dollars for this at festivals is an easy sale and a huge mark up and profit!

Too many colors slows down you production because the kids will take forever to make up their minds what colors they want to use. (This also applies to flavors of snow cone syrups, if you get into that business.) The only reason I might expand on this is if your are having individual customers pay for the spin art themselves. At company picnics where everything is already paid for, stick to four colors. One quart of each will get you through several events. (Unless they're large events.) Always take extra paint, and extra everything, for that matter. The paint is safe, non-toxic and water based.

Spin art is very versatile for almost any kids event. I would heartily suggest this activity for any kids entertainment business. You just can't miss.

Sydney has long been recognized and renowned worldwide for its vibrant art and entertainment scene as well as for its lively sports calendar and fun-filled year-round festivals.

The Opera House is the centerpiece of Sydney's performing arts scene and the venue of choice for Australia's preeminent performances in ballet, opera, music and theatre. There is also the nearby Wharf, the base of such leading performance groups such as the Sydney Dance Company, the Bangarra Dance Company and the Sydney Theatre Company.

The Theatre Royal and the baroque State Theatre regularly stage traditional theater productions while the newly-renovated Capitol is a favorite venue for long-running musicals. The Lyric Theater, Belvois Street and the Showroom, which is housed in the Star City Casino, are other popular entertainment venues. The Ensemble regularly stages productions headlined by popular Australian actors.

For foreign visitors with alternative tastes, we strongly urge a visit to The Stables and the Performance Space. Meanwhile, for a taste of contemporary dance and ballet, the Opera House and the Wharf are excellent choices while The Bondi Pavilion, Enmore Theatre and Seymour Centre are more than worth the visit. Jazz enthusiasts will love the Basement at Circular Quay and Pontoon.

The music scene is alive and thriving in venues such as the City Recital Hall, the Customs House and the Sydney Entertainment Centre, which regularly stages international concerts. The Rose of Australia in Erskineville has developed an excellent reputation for the quality of its live bands.

Sydney is also acclaimed for the quality and diversity of its museums. For a fun and educational afternoon, The Australian and Powerhouse Museums are the places to explore. People with a fascination for naval ships will appreciate The National Maritime Museum while those with a thing for ghosts, especially ghosts of dead prison convicts, may find a trip to the Hyde Park Barracks interesting.

In addition, the State Library of New South Wales offers a wealth of knowledge while Macleay Museum provides an eye-opening exhibit of over 9,000 stuffed birds as well as Charles Darwin's flea.

Australia's leading art institution is the Art Gallery of NSW, which houses perhaps the most significant collection of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander works. It also contains an impressive array of European and Asian art. Visit the Museum of Sydney for its unique approach to narrating Australia's colonial and indigenous history. The Museum of Contemporary Art boasts of a fine international collection of art pieces, and the Manly Art Gallery & Museum has a permanent display of over 800 paintings tracing the colorful history of beach culture.

On the other hand, if your idea of art and entertainment carries an epicurean yearning, then Sydney's vivacious club scene will provide all the excitement that you need. Virtually every year, there are new and hip places in the city that draw in the most upscale and sophisticated crowds, such as Darling Harbor, DCM, Q Bar, Mr Goodbar and Rogues are other popular choices for foreign visitors looking for a swinging night out in Sydney.

Lastly, the city's best bars and pubs include the likes of Longrain, the Grand Pacific Blue Room, Gilligans and Dugout Bar (underneath Burdekin Hotel). Business types, both foreign and local, usually converge at SlipInn, Wine Banc, Aqua Luna Bar and Jacksons On George.
