Even if you're hiring a clown or other entertainment for a child's party you may want to come up with ideas on how to keep the children busy before the entertainment arrives or after the entertainment leaves. Here are seven ways to keep the kids happily entertained throughout the entire party.
1) Provide coloring pages and plenty of crayons for the kids to color with. You can go to a kid's toy store or a 99 cent store and purchase coloring books. You can also go to your computer, Google coloring pages, and print out those coloring pages you think the kids would enjoy.
2) Keep the kids busy with arts and crafts. This could include buying small plastic bottles of assorted shapes and different colored sand and having the children create sand art. Another arts and crafts idea is to provide the children with Play-doh and have them shape the Play-doh into any object they like. A third idea is to provide construction paper with glitter and various other assorted objects so the kids can use the glitter to make pictures. The best place to purchase all this is at your local arts and crafts store.
3) Have the kids decorate cupcakes or large cookies. You can buy different color frosting for this. You can also use sprinkles, M&Ms or other miniature candies so the kids can create faces on top of their cupcakes or cookies.
4) Play musical games with the kids. Keep in mind if you hire a clown or other entertainer chances are the clown will play musical games with them like limbo, hokey pokey, chicken dance etc. So some additional ideas are musical chairs and pass the hot potato with prizes given to the winner. Another idea is to have dance contests. Sometimes these dance contests can be broken up into a contest for boys and a contest for girls. These dance contests can also be divided into a contest for younger children and a contest for older children with prizes handed out to the winners.
5) Have the kids stomp on bubble wrap in time to the music. You can purchase long rolls of bubble wrap at a UPS store or any store that sells packing supplies.
6) Host a treasure hunt in your house or backyard. One fun way of creating a treasure hunt is to use brightly colored paper with pictures (or words depending on the age group of the kids) to show where the next clue lies.
7) Another fun thing for the kids is breaking open a pi?ata. Stuff the pi?ata with candies (and maybe little toys) for the kids. There is a choice of pi?ata where the kids pull on the string or the choice where the kids take turns hitting the pi?ata with a stick until the pi?ata breaks open and the candy comes falling out. The kids will have a blast gathering around with little cups or bags to scoop up the candy.
You can also shorten the length of the party. If your party is three hours long and your guests show up an hour late then in the two hours your guests are there they will be occupied with the entertainment for an hour (or hour and a half) and the serving of the food and birthday cake almost the entire time they are there.
