Giorgione: The Poet of Vision
9:44 AM
Giorgione's brief but meteoric career ended prematurely in 1510, yet the small but impressive body of works he left speaks a new poetic language. A the beginning of the Sixteenth century he transformed Venetian painting from narrative to allegory and infused the landscape with mystical power, giving it equal status with the figure. Giorgione's revolutionary technique in which line is absorbed by color altered the course of painting and began the modern era. The "Giorgionesque" vision transforms color into light, and uses shadow to create an emotional as well as an optical atmosphere. A mythical figure himself, Giorgione invented the Romantic portrait of the artist as hero and poet. -- This video explores Giorgione's works in detail, scanning their sensuous surfaces and probing their elusive meanings. In works such as the SLEEPING VENUS and the TEMPEST, the camera reveals the spontaneity of brush strokes and freedom from academic dryness which later inspired Manet and the Impressionists.
