Magicians often have assistants and there are many good reasons to do so. However, whether or not an assistant is right for you or not does depend on a wide variety of variables. Let's take a closer look at whether or not you should be working with another person.

If you have just left your first magic shop with some beginner card tricks, then the odds are that it might be a bit premature to begin thinking about an assistant. More than likely, you should first be focusing your efforts on learning a few basic card tricks and being able to perform those tricks in front of an audience.

On the other hand, even more experienced magicians may find that they don't yet need an assistant. For example, this is often the case with those who perform street magic. The simple fact is that not every magician performs the kinds of tricks that require an assistant. Don't go out and get an assistant simply to have one. This wouldn't be extremely productive and may, in fact, take away from the overall perception of quality in your magic act. This, of course, is the last thing that you want.

When Should You Find an Assistant?

If your magic goes beyond just card tricks and you really do need an assistant, then by all means start looking for one. In fact, you may already know someone who is perfect for the job. If not, consider placing an ad on a website like Craigslist, as you will be amazed at the interesting applications that you receive.

Consider Your Venue

As you may have discerned, the decision as to whether or not you need an assistant for your magic act depends greatly upon what kind of act you are going to have. If you are performing in a large theater, having other people involved in the show often adds a bit of visual intrigue. Yet, don't feel as though the decision needs to be permanent. Regardless of which direction you go, remember that you can always add or drop an assistant when the need rises. In other words, if you want to just do some simple card tricks or street magic, then you can always work on your own.
