Mexican Blankets

7:49 PM

What are Mexican blankets?
Mexican blankets have been around for more than two thousand years. Some other names for these blankets include serapes, Falsa blankets and Saltillos. They have come a long way from little fabrics with simple lines to beautiful, unique coverings that may cost a few hundred dollars. At first, people made them with Churro sheep wool and yarn. Much appreciated for their durability and vivid colors and designs, these are now a symbol of Mexican culture.

Mexican Blankets are Superb garments
Standard serapes are made in various sizes, corresponding to both queen-sized beds and a simple coffee table. They are usually long and narrow, which makes them perfect as a table runner, while smaller pieces are suitable for use as place mats. You can also hang them on walls, to add more color and shine to the room.

Mexican Blankets Make Wonderful Gifts
They usually come in multiple bright colors with blue, pink, turquoise, yellow, red and orange. There is always one dominant color that appears several times throughout the blanket in larger stripes. Because of their unique beauty, they make wonderful decorative gifts. In its own way, every serape blanket tells a story.

More Creative Ways to use Mexican blankets
Today, these blankets can be used in many different ways, although at first they were simple fabrics that covered the ground. Eventually, people cut a hole in the center of serape blankets and this is how the Mexican poncho was born.

The options are limitless and you can use them anyway you want. Just throw a blanket over your shoulders, get a sombrero and you're ready for your Mexican themed party. In fact, the popular Cinco de Mayo Mexican fiesta made the serapes even more popular, as they were used as tablecloth, centerpiece or table runner.

People also use them as couch covers, bedspread and even use them as curtains all over the house. Some more eccentric people use these blankets as upholstery for their vintage cars. They can also be used as picnic table cloths or Yoga blankets or anything similar. Other people take their serapes with them when they go for an afternoon nap in their hammock.

Also, serapes are popular gifts among college students who are going away from home to remind them of their family or keep them warm.

Mexican blankets also make great gifts for loved ones as housewarming gifts, holidays and birthdays and for just about any occasion. Because they are very resistant, they can be easily tossed into the washing machine and cleaned easily.

A lot of rap artist use ghost writers to write the songs that they put out and it is common in the music business. If you are looking for someone to assist you in the making of your rap song then look into ghost writers. A lot of artist have the talent of performing, but are not that good at the art of writing lyrics.

Usually a writer will sell the lyrics for a set price as a work for hire or will be willing to accept only the publishing rights by maintaining the copyrights of that song. There is also the opportunity to split the publishing with the ghost writer. I can tell you that by using a ghost writer your chances of getting your song published and heard by music industry executives will increase. You can also collaborate with writers to insure that your ideas are implemented in the song.

Japanese shows has a unique style, it's not as great as Korean dramas but it is okay. The story is the good part but I don't believe the acting is that good. So what you need to watch for is the story of the drama. Want to know some dramas that can peak your interest? Here are some suggestions you can watch.

Hana Kimi: It's about a girl who needs to get inside an all boys school because she has a debt to pay off. The star athlete from the school has been injured because of her and she somehow wants to repay him. No one knows that she is a girl so she starts to live comfortably. But people find out and she doesn't know what to do anymore. She loves the boy who has saved her so watch what happens between the two of them and also the whole school.

Gokusen: This has many seasons to it and it's all great. It's about a teacher who is from a Yakuza, a gang, family. She wants to stay a teacher so she needs to keep it a secret but she only teaches the bad kids. And with bad kids there will always be trouble. So she needs to protect her students and make them succeed in life. She needs to gain the trust of her students so watch how she will do that. Remember that there are seasons to this drama so if you like it, watch it all.

Now that you know two Japanese dramas, you should go ahead and watch them. They are a bit weird compared to Korean dramas but still fun to watch. They have a crazy personality when acting and you will be able to see it. It's a totally different style than the Koreans but it's all good. So hurry up and watch them!

Take your pick at any of these Korean dramas I'm going to blabber out. They are a fun watch and it will get you hooked on to it for a long time. It comes out with about 20 episodes or more. The best ones are probably the older versions but there are also a lot of new Korean dramas that are coming out. Here are some of the suggestions I was supposed to blabber out.

Full House: It's about a girl who soon finds out that her house was taken over by this rich boy. So she decides that she will stand her ground and stay in the house, with the boy. So they soon start fighting but learn that they have feelings for each other. Watch what happens when they both confess to each other about their love for one or another.

Cain And Abel: One of my all time favorite drama. This story is somewhat like the Bible story Cain and Abel but the difference is that the brother does not die. He comes back to find out who tried to kill him and then learns that it was his own brother. The setting of the show is mostly in the hospital. Watch how he uncovers the truth and what he does to his brother.

There is a lot of conflict going on in both these dramas. And that's what makes it more fun to watch. They are entirely different but somewhat the same. It's different because one is more of a happy setting, Full House, and one is more of a sad setting, Cain And Abel. They are both a great watch and it really gets to you. Emotionally you will feel happy or sad, depending on which one you watch. But make sure you watch both of it soon!

Some brands of guitar stick out in the minds of musicians of all types. For cars the list is Lamborghini, Porsche, and Ferrari. Amongst guitars, Gibson brings this kind of quality to mind. And you don't need the most expensive guitar in the line to get the quality you'd expect from such a brand. This is true for a lot of reasons.

Gibson guitars have a classic look. An instrument needs to perform, and obviously a Gibson does, but for many people the look of a Gibson is alluring. The tunings pegs have a vintage style and shape, the colours (especially the different "bursts") are simply stunning, and the company has produced so many quintessential guitars for various genres that the image of a Gibson has come to be one of the first images people summon in their imagination when they think of the company. This is true in acoustic playing with the J-45, it's true of hard rock with the Gibson Les Paul's, and the old ES series is the archetypical jazz archtop. Seeing the guitars of legends in your own hands is a good feeling!

But there's a reason why knock off companies who produce guitars that look like the real thing don't clean up. A guitar must perform. For performers, a crowd will be unforgiving if your guitar won't keep tune, and nobody wants to tune it between songs. For beginners, it's easy to believe you're not playing well in the elementary stages if you hear cacophonous sounds coming from your strings, and this can be disheartening; even if you're playing right, you don't have the ear to determine that your guitar is out of tune and it's not the fault of your inchoateness. Also, Gibson guitars are precisely crafted so the strings and the neck are perfectly parallel. This is of the utmost importance to a player as ideally the strings are of equal distance along the entire length of the neck. Guitar necks are given to warping, and in cheap instruments this can happen more than you'd like!

Finally, the reason why guitars are played in the first place: the sound. For this there is no substitute. To the untrained eye guitars might look the same, but hearing the two one after the other is no contest. Whether it's their vintage acoustic guitars or their new digitally tuned guitars these guitars sound classic! They are known for their deep, well rounded tone. The arch-tops have a thick but warm, mellow sound that's ideal for chording or soloing. The Les Pauls have a distinct crunch that other luthiers envy. The other reasons alone wouldn't be sufficient cause to explain Gibson's dominance in the field for so many decades.

The Gibson brand has become synonymous not just with the legends who play it, but with superiority in general. They have never cut corners to sacrifice the quality of their instruments. Their innovations over the years have been appreciated by pros and novice's alike, and it's no wonder that for so many years people have purchased their guitars.

Some of the most important mythical creatures are elves. They will normally appear as some peaceful jolly and helpful creatures, much unlike trolls and ogres. Ask any child about Christmas Elves, and he will start by mentioning Santa Claus and his team of Elves unpacking toys. There are many types of elves and here are some quick facts about them.

1) Just the same as trolls, Elves first came from Norse mythology. At their genesis, Elves were intended to be divine creatures who possessed magical abilities. They were later classed into good and evil elves. Other modern mythologies still have elves featuring prominently, including the Icelandic, Germanic and Scandinavian.

2) Up to recently, they will be associated more with folk stories and have a baby-face look, characterized with no facial hair at all. They mostly live in the wild, under rocks, hills and around wells.

The elves are normally small bodies creatures, each never seeming to grow past a certain age. They are normally playful and get into mischief more often than not.

3) In USA, the Elves are mostly associated with Santa Claus, meaning they feature a lot around Christmas as Santa"s helpers in making toys. They crush at the North Pole and often wear red and green clothing.

In facial sense, the elves have carrot like noses ad long ears. They wear hats too. You never see an animation of Santa without the Elves.

4) Other Fantasy Elves that you may know of are in those like The Hobbit and the movie, Lord of the Rings. The role-playing game that features the well is Dungeons and Dragons. They are smart and picturesque creatures but physically weak.

5) Normally, you would not look at Christmas Elves as elfish at all. In fact apart from Elfin and Elven the Elves, which appear in the advertisements of Keebler Cookies, you would not consider Elves as "creatures".

Something that I see constantly when playing tournaments online is players who build a decent chip stack, lose one hand, be it to a bad beat or just a better hand at the wrong time, and then they proceed to get desperate to replenish their chips. I don't call it 'tilt' although it may be close to that, but what usually happens is that players will start to push too much with marginal hands because they are worried about the loss they just had. In every tournament I have ever played that I have won or made the money in, there has been a loss that I have had to recover from. Never will you run through an entire tournament without losing a confrontation along the way. Learning how to deal with this is the key to playing successful tournament poker.

For example, last night I was playing a $33k KO tournament and the bigger stacks at the table were in the $16k-$22k range. Two players to my right got into a hand all-in. The bigger stack had 19k and the smaller 7k. The big stack had Q-Q and the small had K-K. The K's held up and the big stack went from $19k to $12k chip stack. Keep in mind the blinds were only $200-$400 at this point with no antes.

To make a long story short, this former big stack starting bullying trying to pick up enough hands to make up for his loss. I picked up A-K and took most of his remaining chips when he got carried away with A-J. I had position, I was playing fairly tight, we should never have gotten that involved with A-J. But, he was still smarting from the previous loss and I was able to exploit that.

You will see these types of scenarios online all the time, especially in tournaments. If you can exploit it in another player when you pick up a big hand against them, fine, but the main thing is to avoid letting it happen to you. Losses will happen, keep playing your game and you will build your chip stack back up. If you let it get in your head, your tournament will be over quickly.

Magicians often have assistants and there are many good reasons to do so. However, whether or not an assistant is right for you or not does depend on a wide variety of variables. Let's take a closer look at whether or not you should be working with another person.

If you have just left your first magic shop with some beginner card tricks, then the odds are that it might be a bit premature to begin thinking about an assistant. More than likely, you should first be focusing your efforts on learning a few basic card tricks and being able to perform those tricks in front of an audience.

On the other hand, even more experienced magicians may find that they don't yet need an assistant. For example, this is often the case with those who perform street magic. The simple fact is that not every magician performs the kinds of tricks that require an assistant. Don't go out and get an assistant simply to have one. This wouldn't be extremely productive and may, in fact, take away from the overall perception of quality in your magic act. This, of course, is the last thing that you want.

When Should You Find an Assistant?

If your magic goes beyond just card tricks and you really do need an assistant, then by all means start looking for one. In fact, you may already know someone who is perfect for the job. If not, consider placing an ad on a website like Craigslist, as you will be amazed at the interesting applications that you receive.

Consider Your Venue

As you may have discerned, the decision as to whether or not you need an assistant for your magic act depends greatly upon what kind of act you are going to have. If you are performing in a large theater, having other people involved in the show often adds a bit of visual intrigue. Yet, don't feel as though the decision needs to be permanent. Regardless of which direction you go, remember that you can always add or drop an assistant when the need rises. In other words, if you want to just do some simple card tricks or street magic, then you can always work on your own.

As I was playing a 90-player SnG on Full Tilt earlier, I noticed about 95% of the players playing these tournaments make floundering plays that they really have no idea why they are making them. These tournaments start out with small blinds and you have a fairly deep stack of $3k in chips. Because of this format, there has to be specific reasons for the plays you are making.

First? of all, I see a ton of players making position plays. Trying to steal blinds from the button, trying a squeeze play, etc. There is no need AT ALL for these types of plays early in the tournament. Why would you want to steal $90 worth of blinds when you have a $3k chip stack? The answer is that you wouldn't, but many players think they are supposed to make these types of plays because they have read somewhere that they should. However, most of the time they just end up getting themselves into trouble.

If you want a simple strategy for playing tournaments such as a 90-player, it is this: simply see as many hands as you can and try to catch a monster. The way I build my chip stack in these games is not to make big plays with A-K or A-Q, but to play suited connectors and pocket pairs. In this way, you can trap a player who cannot lay down face cards or big slick when you hit your flush, straight draw or hit trips.

You don't have to raise a ton and get carried away and you shouldn't be playing hands like Q-9 off suit, that is not what I am saying. But, if you can catch a big flop with cards like 5-6 suited, you can end up doubling up off a player you plays K-Q way too strong.

There are a mind boggling amount of guitar effects pedals about and they come in all different shapes and sizes. What is an effect pedal you may ask? An effect pedal is a device that is put between your guitar and the amplifier to alter the output sound. A pedal is made up of numerous components put into a case. The sounds that you can achieve from various effect pedals are quite extraordinary.

Guitarists today use more effects than ever and are evident to the sounds of bands such as Pink Floyd and U2. Numerous effect pedals are used in succession to complicate the sound. There are two main pedals out there. One is the multi effects processors and these contain numerous built into a single device. Alternatively, individual pedals focus on giving you one sound and not more than two. Such pedals involve you playing around with settings in order to get your intended sound. Many amplifiers these days have built-in sounds for you to use but they are not as versatile as pedals. This is because it is hard to utilize more than one sound simultaneously on amps.

Pedals cost from $60 or ?40 upwards and include a broad range of prices. Specialist brands include Boss, Marshall, Pete Cornish, Electro Harmonic, Yahama, Dunlop and Digitech. As a budding guitarist, you could easily wipe your bank account clean upon purchasing guitar effects pedals due to the countless variety out there. What I recommend is that you only purchase one pedal for each main sound.

Recommended guitar effect pedals

Delay and Reverb sounds give a strong echo sound and is great if you are really playing live. This sounds professional like and is very convincing. Distortion and gain guitar effects pedals are widely used with electric guitars and are certainly used in lead and solo guitar playing. This adds crunch and meat to your sound and certainly does sound sweet. As stated previously, multi effects processors are a great for beginners as they have access to all the different possibilities right in front of them. All of these mentioned are the essential pedals that you must have in order to sound great.

After you have gotten hold of the main pedals, you may want to look for a few more to sound even great! A wah-wah effect allows the sound pitch to be constantly changed through the use of a pedal. This was heavily utilized by Jimi Hendrix. Added effects include Flanger, Chorus and Phase shifter also know as a uni-vibe. These pedals sound slightly similar to each other, however they do sound beautiful. Chorus and Flanger pedals sound very sweet and made famous by David Gilmour and created the sounds of Pink Floyd. Most of these sound best with little to no gain or distortion.

Imagine a ballroom dance; what do you see? Elegantly dressed ladies chaperoned by gentlemen in tuxedos twirling around a beautiful and exquisite ballroom. In the late 18th Century ballroom dancing began in England. Initially the property solely of the upper classes but quickly adopted by the lower classes a little later.

The Quickstep is a popular dance at many ballroom dance competitions and started in the 1920s in England. The dance evolved from the Foxtrot, the Charleston and a couple of other dances, and has undergone many changes over the years. Although some dancers still perform the dance slowly, nowadays the dance is faster than it was at its outset. In fact, it is danced to the fastest tempo of the ballroom dances. A further change since the inception of the dance is the usage of more syncopation in the steps. Three characteristic dance figures of the Quickstep are the chasses, where the feet are brought together, the lockstep and quarter turns. Distinctive to the Quickstep is an up and down, rise and fall swinging motion performed at a fast pace.

First Basic Step. The lead dancer steps forward on their right foot - slow, then step to the side on the left - quick (the feet should now be parallel), the right foot is brought together with the left - quick, finally stepping out to the side with the left foot again - slow. It continues, step back with the right foot and step to the side on the left (feet again in a parallel position), the right foot is brought together with the left, and then step out again with the left foot. To allow progress around the dance floor the lead dancer would initiate the step out, adding further variety with turns and runs.

When observing the Quickstep, it may appear similar to the whirling figures common in a waltz. However, listen to the music, and you will be able to recognise that it is not the waltz, but the Quickstep performed at 4/4 time rather than the waltz at 3/4 time. Another indication that you are seeing the Quickstep is the jazzy fast beat of the songs compared to the slow waltz song.

Today most ballroom dance lessons not only include the Quickstep but also the tango, fox trot, samba, rumba, the jive, the cha cha cha and the paso doble. The tango has 4/4 meter and uses medium tempo orchestral type of music. The foxtrot also has a 4/4 meter and its basic rhythm is slow quick quick, performed with medium or slow jazz music. The Samba boasts an exhilarating Latin beat with 2/4 meter and has approximately 100 beats per minute, whilst the cha cha cha is usually to a Latin beat but, unlike the samba, has a medium tempo with 128 beats per minute. On the hand, or should I say foot, the rumba is to a slow Latin ballad and its tempo is 104 beats per minute with a meter of 4/4. The jive is a fast moving swing type music with 176 beats per minute. Lastly, there is the paso doble, its meter is 2/4 and rhythm is similar to a march with one-step beat and dramatic likened to bullfight music.

A controversial author of her times whose work was largely ignored at the time of publication, Anais Nin gained wide spread acceptance and acclaim in the 1960s when she garnered acceptance as one of the most prolific female writers who had dared to dabble in the elusive genre of female eroticism. Nin's work primarily included her diaries that bespeak of a woman's journey of self discovery through the various stages of her life.

She penned down her experiences of over 30 years, from 1931 to 1974 in her memoirs which today serve as an inspiration for women across the world who are trying to break out of stereotypical gender roles and biases.

Nin's artistic parental background and her eventual bohemian lifestyle gave her the conviction to touch upon a side of feminine sensuality which was often considered off limits and even taboo. Through her works, she has explored various issues that women deal with in their lives including incest. Her literary journey began with the publication of 'D H Lawrence: An Unprofessional Study", which she remarkably wrote in just 16 days. The book was not officially published in the US and as a result she sent copies of it to Gotham Book Mart to be sold for a dollar a piece; thus began her journey to literary stardom.

While Nin has several journals and books to her credit her most widely acclaimed and well received books to date include:

D.H Lawrence: An Unprofessional Study

This was Nin's first published work which probably whet her appetite for the controversial books that she found fame in. The book was her tribute to her literary hero DH Lawrence. It was a study of some of the author's popular work. By the time the book went into publication; most critics had shunned Lawrence's work. Not only was it unusual for Nin to choose his work for her book but also the fact that she was a woman who appreciated DH Lawrence's writing which was often laced with sexual content was equally surprising

Collages

This was Nin's last published novel which was notable in its shift from her regular style. This novel had none of the familiar characters that Nin's fans were expecting. Also, as the name suggests, the book had almost two dozen important characters and there was quite a bit of geographical movement which was absent in her other work.

Winter of Artifice

This was Nin's second published novels. It originally went into publication in Paris and gives a candid review of Nin's incestuous relationship with her father.

Under a Glass Bell

Claimed to be one of the finest works from the author; the book was the first of several to be printed in Nin's own press. A collection of short stories that touched upon several facets of life from writing journals to late abortions etc; many critics regard it as her finest work. Under a glass bell finally got Nin the recognition that she deserved.

House of Incest

This was Nin's first fictional book. Although most readers expected to read a graphical description of Nin's liaisons with her lovers, this book revolved around the central character trying to escape from a dream state that she finds herself trapped in.

Delta of Venus

A book with a strong incline towards the exploration of sexuality and eroticism, it contains several short stories with some of the characters finding their way into more than one story. The book was written for a person identified simply as the "collector" for his private consumption.

Little Birds

Although the book was written in 1940 when she was commissioned by the 'Collector" along with other writers, this work from Nin was published two years after her death. The book includes 13 short stories that explore various sexual themes from lesbianism to pedophilia.

Cities of the Interior

This was a collection of 5 novels from Anais Nin; Ladders of Fire, the Four Chambered Heart, Children of the Albatross, Seduction of the Minotaur and Spy in the House of Love. Of the 5 books in this series, the Four Chambered Heart was autobiographical in nature while the Spy in the House of Love revolved around the journey of Sabina who is considered to be an alter ego of the author.

The Diary of Anais Nin

This is a published version of Nin's private diary; the entries in the manuscript started when Nin was just 11 and she continued writing in it till her death. The diaries are available in seven volumes while the expurgated versions of the diaries contain more sexually graphic material than the original published manuscript.

Henry and June: From A Journal of Love: the Unexpurgated Diary of Ana?s Nin (1931-1932)

This is a book which was published in 1986 which is based upon her unpublished diaries. It has a few similarities to her published diaries but also quite a few differences. It focuses on her very passionate affair with Henry Miller and his wife June Miller.

Anais Nin was an interesting character. The above works highlight some interesting works by a great writer.

These days everyone accuses the mainstream news outlets of bias. Fox News, as we know, is perceived to be the benchmark for conservative news broadcasting. On the other hand, MSNBC has evolved, particularly within the past few years, as the liberals' direct response to Fox News. On the web, we find the Drudge Report on one side and the Huffington Post on the other. And, of course, we can not forget the real or perceived biases associated with the rest of the "liberal media", such as the New York Times, CNN, and whoever else. Because of this, it is important for the those that follow the news to understand the subtle techniques by which media outlets attempt to bias their consumers. The following list identifies the most common techniques that attempt to bend the viewer and reader of news to a given point of view. They are as follows:

5) Perceived facts and actual facts

What are the facts of the story? The most non-biased stories only describe the facts, i.e., who, what, why, when, where, and how. To add to the story, a reporter may include eye witness account(s) or expert opinions. In many instances, however, news outlets will air a story based on a set of perceived facts. Remember, facts are concrete and do not change unless influenced by other facts. Commonly held opinions are most often confused with facts, such as "MSNBC and Fox News are extremely biased news organizations."

4) Sources and "experts"

Who is quoted in the story? Eye witness sources are the most credible. In many instances, however, in the absence of eye witness sources, the news outlet will turn to experts to help elucidate the meaning of the facts within the story. How can one identify whether an expert is an expert? Or does the "expert" have an agenda? Perhaps the best examples of non-expert exerts are politicians. A story on climate change, for instance, may include "expert" testimony from a politician. If the politician did not come from a professional or academic background that studied climate science, however, chances are the news outlet is more interested in either supporting or discrediting given arguments within the broader debate over climate change.

3) Word choice

Word choice may be the most subtle and manipulative techniques to bias the viewer. The best reporters stick to simple and clear language to communicate the facts within a story. Because there are many linguistic tricks reporters employ to implicitly communicate bias, such tricks may be difficult to identify within a passive viewing environment, such as TV news. The best example is the commonly used implication that a vast majority within a given demographic share the same opinion, for instance: "the American people believe..." or "many people say..."

2) Omission of context

The most commonly cited defense for those chastised by the media is "I was taken out of context..." Indeed, given today's reporting, they are probably right. Snippets from speeches or other sources are easily strung together in a series of quotes that can either indict or exonerate an individual or organization's opinion.

1) Story selection

Watch the headlines, read the stories. There are plenty of news outlets that only air stories which cast doubt upon one political philosophy and/or prop up their own. It is fascinating to examine such sites and identify the techniques by which they choose to influence the reader and viewer. Are the headlines sensationalized? Do all them tend to point in one direction? Most importantly, are the stories even newsworthy or are they attempting to manufacture controversy?

In 1919 the entire town of Hibbing, Minnesota was picked up and moved to a new location two miles away.

Okay, technically it didn't happen in 1919. The last building was finally moved in 1960. And technically it wasn't the entire town, either. It was only the buildings. The streets, sidewalks and trees stayed behind.

Oh, and so did the iron mine it was sitting smack on top of.

But we get ahead of ourselves.

Hibbing was established in 1893 by miners working the surrounding Mesabi Range iron ore deposits. By 1915 it had grown to over 20,000 residents and was called the "Richest Village in the World" thanks to the iron money pouring it.

However along about that time a geologic survey indicated that Hibbing just happened to be sitting right on top of the largest deposit of iron in the region. So the town residents did what any right thinking people would do - they picked up and moved off of it.

In an age before heavy industrial machinery this was no mean feat. First they raised each building off its foundations and cleared these away. Then they lowered the buildings back down onto logs they had placed underneath and hitched up horses. Sorta like Yul Brenner did in the "10 Commandments" movie.

Remarkably, this actually worked. All the buildings except one - over 200 of them, in fact - safely made the trip to the new town's location.

As for the mine under the old location...

Seems they were right in picking up and moving. The Hull-Rust mine today is the world's largest open-pit iron mine and produces 1.4 billion tons of ore a year.

In 1993 Moray graduated with an honours degree in fine art from the Limerick School of Art and Design and later that year co-founded Bui ...

Me for one. My daughter has me hooked. I must admit it's kind of weird. I had never heard of Peppa Pig until my daughter saw it on a childrens TV channel and was, from then on, addicted. And I do mean addicted, well and truly obsessed. Up until 6 months ago I had no idea who Peppa Pig was but I had heard mutterings and whisperings of and about her from friends who also had small children. I naively thought that my wife and I would be spared this affliction. Our strict control of the television would prevent our daughter falling into the black hole of pig addiction. We were so wrong. She found Peppa Pig and is now officially an addict. Hooked to a cartoon pig.

So who is this mysterious pig?
Peppa Pig is a little girl pig who has a small brother called George, a mammy, daddy, granny, grandpa and lots of friends and they all live happily on tops of hills and love jumping in muddy puddles. The drawings are extremely simple, with bold outlines and clean colours. The stories are simple and sweet, the characters warm and cuddly. Personally, I'd love to live in Peppa Pig land, everything is fun, bright, happy and without the stress and anxiety of a world of economic bailouts, political corruption and utter incompetence. However, what I find most interesting about my daughters addiction to this pig is that she became hooked all by herself. She only has a few words, has no friends as such and it will be a long time before she goes to school so her love of the cartoon didn't come via her peers, reading reviews, books, television listings, social networks, from the word on the street, the playground, etc. No. She saw it, loved it, simple as that. It seems the popularity of the cartoon connects to all children. It is a phenomenon and a pretty big achievement for its creators. But what makes it click with millions of kids? What makes it work so well? Is it the animation, the colour, the lightness, the voices, the warmth? Who knows? What I do know is that it is very clever and I love watching it too.

Problem though is that my daughter thinks it's on all the time, that there is a 24hour Peppa Pig channel so whenever she sees a TV - on or off - she grabs the remote control and says 'Peppa' or 'George' (that constitutes about 20% of her entire vocabulary). Naturally, being only a tot she doesn't understand that there is such a thing as TV schedules and so ensues a long protracted argument which inevitably ends with me, or my wife, desperately seeking a way out, a distraction to diffuse the situation (the promise of milk or raisins usually works). What makes all this worse is that because we live in a world of merchandising my daughter sees Peppa all around her, all the time, everytime we going shopping together. Peppa is on duvets, sheets, pillows, toys, cups, cards, dvds, etc, etc, etc.

My wife and I are trapped in the world of a cartoon pig and her family. Does anyone else have the same problem? Does anyone else like Peppa Pig? I've embedded an episode for you. Let me know what you think in the?comments box below.

And just an insider tip: The voice over actor for Nanny Plum in Ben and Hollys little Kingdom (another great cartoon) does the voice for Rebecca Rabbit in Peppa Pig...

In South Africa there is a huge culture that is centered on braais. There is something that we love about gathering together with friends and family around the fire, making delicious meat. In a lot of cases, most women of the house would prefer to have a braai than a dinner party because this means a lot less hassle for many different reasons! In this article we discuss why you should throw a braai instead a dinner party.

The first reason why you should host a braai instead of a dinner party is the convenience. There is a lot less organization and preparation that goes into a braai. You do not have to worry about making fancy five course meals, you can simply make sure you have meat and condiments for the meat. The atmosphere around a braai is a lot more relaxed, so there is a lot less expected of you. The fantastically convenient part of this is that you will usually not have to deal with such a big mess inside your house after the party, because everyone will stay outside by the braai most of the time. The convenience of a braai is a large factor in its popularity. You can plan a braai and throw everything together perfectly in a very short space of time as opposed to a dinner party.

The convenience of the food preparation is probably one of the best parts of hosting a braai as opposed to a dinner party. When you have a braai, it is perfectly acceptable to throw some well marinated meat onto the fire and serve it with complimenting food. You can make this complimenting food very easy, as it is usually the norm to serve potato salad, bean salad or regular salad with braai meat. Soft rolls usually go along well with this, and even chips or jacket potatoes that have been cooked on the braai too. Naturally, you feel more comfortable cooking these kinds of simply prepared foods at a relaxed braai than at a dinner party. There is more pressure to impress with the food at a dinner party as opposed to a braai. One thing most women love about braais is that the food preparation is simpler and thus it keeps the kitchen cleaner. It is normal for the men to be responsible for cooking the meat and preparing the fire, and in some households, this will be the only time you will find a man cooking.

In conclusion, you can see why braais are more fun, and why there is a better atmosphere around a braai! There is such a nice sense of community and fun, and you can also make use of being outdoors while you braai. You can swim and include outdoor activities in your braai. It is easy to see why braais are better than dinner parties, so what are you waiting for, get braaing!
