The interesting thing about martial arts is, the principles can be used in different aspects of life and you can also take principles from other areas of life and use it in your fighting. I would like to share some lessons that I have learned over the years by watching martial arts movies.

Adaptability:
In the movie Rocky Balboa, after Balboa becomes the champion he challenges Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) - his mentor to fight with him. Though Rocky gets hit at the beginning he manages to knock Balboa down with his street fighting techniques.

A martial artist needs to be able to adapt to different fighting situations. He must learn to adapt to different environments and be prepared to face the unexpected.

Deception:

The last thing you want to do in MMA is to 'telegraph your intentions' When you see Bruce Lee in action he constantly changes his focus and confuses his opponents and make them wonder whether he is going to kick or deliver a punch. Deceive your opponent by directing his attention, move your hand as if you are about to punch and then deliver a kick.

Endurance:

Bruce Lee always stressed on endurance by exercising regularly. It doesn't matter if you know how to knock down an opponent in a few seconds. How many opponents can you knock down like that is what really matters.

Time and space:

To excel in MMA you need to master the 'art of timing' and the 'art of using space'. Improving your speed and accuracy will help you to master the timing. To master the space you need to experiment in different fighting ranges with your friends and learn when to be at a close fighting range and when to remain out of reach.

So, the next time you watch a martial arts movie don't watch it just for entertainment try to learn the lesson it teaches.
